Sorair Obtains First Multi-Site BVLOS Approval from the CAA

November 2025Sorair Technologies is proud to announce that it has been granted a BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) Atypical Approval by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), covering multiple locations across the UK.

Following its UK-wide BVLOS (Visual Mitigation) milestone in July, Sorair has continued to push the boundaries of regulatory innovation — unlocking greater operational flexibility and value for its customers.

This new approval marks a significant step forward by removing the requirement for a visual observer during BVLOS operations, allowing Sorair and its Flight School Members to conduct Fully Remote UAS missions across approved UK sites under the UKSORA framework.

What the Approval Means for Drone Automation Across the Industry

The approval Sorair obtained is a Multi-Site BVLOS Atypical Approval, allowing a select group of Sorair’s Flight School members and adopters of Sorair’s leading drone automation platform, SORANET™ Pilot, to conduct remote BVLOS drone-in-a-box operations across various locations in the UK — significantly enhancing their operational capabilities and the value of their drone programmes.

BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations enable drone pilots to fly beyond the direct line of sight of the remote pilot, unlocking far greater efficiency and scalability for advanced drone services such as Sorair’s SORANET™ automation ecosystem.

BVLOS can involve high-risk, specialised operations. In Q1 2025, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) introduced the new SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) regulatory framework — designed to guide operators performing more complex drone operations beyond the standard PDRA-01 category.

The SORA framework helps operators to:

  • Identify risks posed to people on the ground and to other airspace users.

  • Develop mitigation strategies and operational procedures to manage those risks.

  • Demonstrate that all Operational Safety Objectives (OSOs) have been met for the proposed operation.

Since July 2025, Sorair’s current BVLOS (With an onsite Human Visual Mitigator) operations have proven highly successful across the UK, setting a new benchmark for automated tactical ground risk mitigations in drone operations.

With this latest approval, Sorair has taken things a step further — addressing the air risk component and removing the need for a human visual observer. This risk is now fully mitigated by SORANET itself during flight, making Soranet Pilot the first Level 4 Drone Automation Platform (DAP) in the UK.

Sorair’s Mission: Bringing the Power of Drone Automation to Industry

Sorair’s mission is simple — to bring the power of drone automation to the industry.

With the rapid rise of drone-in-a-box (DIAB) technology from manufacturers such as DJI, the industry’s eyes have been opened to the efficiency, safety, and value that automated drones can provide.

Take the security sector as an example.

By joining Sorair’s Flight School, manned security providers can now eliminate the need for on-site guards in locations where manned security or CCTV simply doesn’t make sense — whether due to:

  • The vast area of the site,

  • Lack of infrastructure,
  • Ground risks that could endanger officers, or

  • The derelict or high-risk nature of certain environments.

Instead, these sites can be protected by a drone-in-a-box powered by SORANET™ Pilot, operated remotely from a central control room — potentially managing multiple sites simultaneously from one location.

This model doesn’t just represent the future of security operations — it signals the next phase for a wider range of data-driven industries, where autonomy and real-time insight redefine how operations are managed.

Looking Ahead

The approval and progress achieved this year mark only the beginning of Sorair’s broader vision. With SORANET™ and its expanding UAS Flight School programme, Sorair is building the foundation for a nationwide network of autonomous UAS operations that are seamlessly integrated, highly efficient, and fully compliant with the UKSORA framework.

By combining advanced automation with real-world operational experience, Sorair continues to demonstrate what’s possible when technology, regulation, and innovation work hand in hand.

The future of UAS operations in the UK is no longer on the horizon — it’s already here, and Sorair is proud to be leading the way.
